Dice di essere un ragazzo fortunato perché gli hanno regalato un sogno. Invece i fortunati siamo noi che lo guardiamo, che stringiamo i pugni, i denti, che soffriamo e godiamo tutte le volte che si sdraia a duecentoventi all'ora, spaventati e ammirati per quell'incoscienza a cui non ci si abitua mai. L'ultimo sogno Valentino Rossi ce lo ha regalato ad Assen, benedetta Olanda, benedetta pista, serpente d'asfalto e violenza a motore. Rossi vince all'ultima curva contro Marquez, il rivale di sempre, ma che paura quando lo spagnolo ha provato a superarlo a pochi metri dall'arrivo, toccando il telaio della Yamaha di Vale, rischiando moltissimo. Anche di buttare via tutto. Rossi ha tenuto la pista, la calma, il coraggio, si è visto costretto a tagliare l'ultima curva e alla fine è il primo ad impennare la moto e i nostri sogni.

È stata una gara tirata, nervosa, massacrante. Valentino tiene la testa che aveva conquistato in settimana, Marquez gli si mette in scia. Lorenzo resta indietro, non darà problemi. Quello tra Vale e Marquez è un inseguimento di ghepardi. Marquez controlla perché ne ha di meno, ma come un cacciatore che segue la sua preda, lo spagnolo resta sempre lì. Rossi mangia la strada, va a tavoletta, deciso di arrivare alla vittoria numero 111 della sua carriera. Qui era arrivata la numero cento, qui aveva già conquistato otto volte il primo posto (questa è la nona). È la sua pista, è il suo tempo. A sette giri dalla fine, Marquez ci prova: supera Rossi, è primo. Ma non è finita qui, non può essere finta qui. E infatti a due lap dal traguardo, Vale torna in testa. È fatta? No. All'ultima curva Marquez abbandona la tattica, si butta all'esterno, Vale chiude, i due si toccano. Oddio. E adesso?

«Succedono sempre queste cose, eravamo molto vicini. Ma quando l'ha visto ha preso la curva all'esterno. Sono contento di essere tornato sul podio», ha detto Marquez. Sul gradino più alto ci sale Rossi, ancora lui, il ragazzo fortunato che ci regala un sogno tutto italiano. A 36 anni, questo giovane, vecchio campione è la sintesi perfetta dell'ambizione. «Non so se è la migliore gara, ma sono stato competitivo per tutta la gara. Ho fatto due ultimi giri molto forti. È una gran vittoria qui ad Assen». Lorenzo, terzo, è un po' più distante adesso. La classifica della MotoGp lancia Rossi in testa e a +10 da Lorenzo, mica male quando mancano dieci gare alla fine.
