I costumi indimenticabili dei film Una bella mostra hollywoodiana

I film sono storie, storie di persone. E un costume designer che si rispetti deve sapere esattamente con chi ha a che fare (attore e personaggio), prima di cucirgli addosso un look credibile. Una sinergia creativa, continua e vivace, alla quale rende omaggio l’esposizione Hollywood Costume, aperta al pubblico fino al 2 marzo 2015, a Los Angeles. La retrospettiva vede protagonisti pezzi unici che ogni cinefilo doc non può che riconoscere e ammirare in tutta la loro bellezza. I costumi, appartenenti a musei, collezionisti privati e studios cinematografici, ripercorrono circa cento anni di storia della filmografia americana e ne riflettono i cambiamenti propri delle diverse epoche.

Gestita dal Victoria and Albert Museum e dall’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, la collezione è esposta nella storica Wilshire May Company Building, la futura sede del Museo Academy of Motion Pictures (che aprirà nel 2017). Una grande rassegna che ospita, tra i 150 costumi esposti, anche pezzi davvero incredibili, come l’originale vestito di Charlot, l’abito di Mary Poppins o gli outfit di Morticia Addams.
Perché «in ogni film, gli abiti sono la metà dell’impresa di dare vita a un personaggio. Diciamo molto attraverso quello che abbiamo addosso». Chi lo sostiene? Meryl Streep, dall’alto di 3 Oscar, che aggiunge di dovere molto ai brillantini pensati per lei da Ann Roth in Mamma Mia. «Dovevo essere sexy: un’impresa titanica, praticamente. Quelli mi hanno aiutato». Prendere nota: non si sa mai. Del resto, pure il grande Bertolucci decretava: «Arriverei a dire che la lunghezza di una gonna, sopra o sotto il ginocchio, a volte è più importante di un'idea di sceneggiatura» (citazione tratta dal documentario del 2006 della Sartoria Tirelli).

Così, la mostra è una sorta di narrazione sotterranea: un messaggio inviato attraverso l’uso di precisi stili e codici di colori che consentono un’immediata collocazione dei personaggi all’interno della trama. Basti pensare all’archeologo-avventuriero Indiana Jones, al tormentato Jim Stark di Gioventù bruciata, oppure al messia digitale Neo: personaggi ai quali immediatamente è associata un’evocativa immagine che li ritrae con i loro caratteristici costumi di scena, senza i quali non sarebbero stati gli stessi. Vi ricordate l'abito rosso di Vivian, quando Richard Gere porta Julia Roberts a teatro per La Traviata, in Pretty Woman? E lo scintillio dei costumi del Grande Gatsby? Diciamo la verità, cosa sarebbe stato John Travolta ne La Febbre del sabato sera senza quel mitico abito a tre pezzi bianco con giacca, gilet e pantalone a zampa con tanto di banda laterale ancheggiante a ritmo delle canzoni dei Bee Gees? O Charlie Chaplin senza bombetta, Spiderman senza tuta rossa e blu, Batman senza mantello, Indiana Jones senza cappello? Impossibile immaginare Audrey Hepburn far colazione da Tiffany con un tubino diverso da quel capolavoro di little black dress disegnato da Hubert de Givenchy. Ci sono abiti che contribuiscono alla costruzione del personaggio, e lo rendono unico.
